Who Was Roch Theriault?
A self-proclaimed prophet, Roch Theriault was a leader of the Ant Hill Kids cult, founded in 1977. The Canadian was a convicted murderer as he killed many under the beliefs and manipulation of his theories and teachings.
The horrifying man was born on 16 May 1947 in Quebec, Canada. He led a tumultuous life as the claims were that his father abused him. However, there was no evidence. He was strongly opposed to the Christian faith as his family was devoutly Catholic. He stopped formal education and only read the Old Testament.
This was the focal point of his founding of the Ant Hill Kids cult, as he genuinely believed that a fight between good and evil would lead to an apocalypse. There were signs of aggression in the form of violent outbursts to family members and friends.
It was in 1977 that he declared himself a prophet and founded the cult! A remote plot was the location for the cult group in the wilderness of Somerville Township of Quebec, Canada.
How Was Life Inside The Ant Hill Kids Cult?
The Ant Hill community was a doomsday cult that believed in the Seventh-day Adventist Church beliefs. It was in the late 1970s and 80s that the Ant Hill Kids went through an escalating amount of torture and oppression in the form of mutilation, sexual assault, and murder.
Living in a remote location in Quebec, Canada, the group was preparing for the impending apocalypse! The group believed in extreme and unbelievable aspects of life while practicing violence and illegal activities to justify them.
I will share with you the horror of being a part of the cult and how Solange suffered the extreme blunt trauma of it, how the leadership of Theriault went to an extreme where his followers feared him. Physical, sexual, and mental abuse became a regular part of their lives!
How Did Horror And Abuse Become An Integral Part Of The Cult?
It all started as a religious movement where people were influenced to join the movement and abandon their lives, sever all family ties, sell all their possessions, and relocate to an isolated commune. They were expecting an apocalypse to occur in 1979!
Can you imagine that the whole group was prohibited from any outside contact? Well, yes, apart from selling baked goods and handmade crafts so that they could fund their ways in life. Apart from Polygamy, over time, the leader started corporal punishment and self-mutilation as a part of religious practices.
The followers were experiencing severe sexual and physical abuse in the form of fingers being cut with wire cutters, burned with welded torches, and regular beatings!
What Happened To Solange Boilard?
The cult leader, Theriault, claimed that all women followers of Ant Hill Kids were his wives, and he imposed his husband’s rights and authority. However, this was just applicable to him as he imposed this on eight women with whom he had 23 children.
Solange Boilard was one of these women who, one day in the year of 1989, was complaining about abdominal pain. Theriault started punching her in the stomach after asking her to open all her clothes. Then he went on to shove a tube inside her rectum and filled it with olive oil, all the while she was naked.
Can you imagine the horror? Well, it did not end there as she was then tied down to a makeshift surgery table, and he cut her stomach open. As he considered himself a leader, he forced another follower to pull out intestines from her body and then stitched her up. Boilard succumbed to her injuries!
Her death was, however, not enough for Theriault, as he then claimed to resurrect her. He went on to force another member of the cult to drill a hole in her skull. He then ejaculated inside the cavity while forcing others to do the same.
Nothing happened, so then he removed a rib from her body and wore it around his neck as a souvenir! She was then buried in the compound by the members of the group.
The Downfall Of Roch Theriault!
Gabriella Lavallee, another follower and claimed wife of Roch Theriault, escaped the community after the death of Solange Boilard! Of course, she was not completely spared of the horror as her fingers were snapped!
The leader sawed through the arm using a hunting knife and then removed one of her breasts. Even her skull was fractured with an axe! Lavallee escaped and went on to report them to the authorities. Theriault was investigated as the head of the Ant Hill Kids community and was finally captured!
A search was launched as he went into hiding. His charges were multiple counts of manslaughter and assault; hence, he was arrested while the cult was dissolved. He then went on to plead guilty to the second-degree murder of Solange Boilard’s death, thus receiving a sentence of life in prison in 1993.
In 2009, he tried to sell his artwork through an auction house of true crime. Can you imagine the horror? In his conjugal visits, he also fathered four more children with the women, who were followers of the Ant Hill Kids cult. He died at the age of 63 at the Dorchester Penitentiary.
Finally, in 2011, Matthew Gerrard McDonald stabbed him to death! Cellmate to Theriault, McDonald was himself a convicted murderer who said, “I’ve sliced him up!” Serving a life sentence in prison for murder, McDonald was not given any additional time for the murder of Theriault!
Finishing Off…
To sum it all up, the death of Solange Boilard was a blip in the huge spectrum of crime that Roch Theriault did in his whole life. The abuse and the torture of his followers have been all acts of crime because they have been physical, sexual, and mental abuse.
After going through the blog, did you realize that the actions of this man consisted of a mentally unstable individual? Committing horrible acts of amputation and mutilation along with sexual abuse was an extreme that nobody should have the power to implement!
Comment on what punishment you think Roch Theriault should have received for his crimes!
