Who Is Debra Jeter?
Born in the 1970s, Debra Janelle Jeter is an American citizen who married Lester Jeter, also known as Lee. The couple had two amazing children, Kiersten and Kelsey Jeter. It all started when the couple started facing issues in their marriage.
Having shared a loving relationship, Debra and Lee started to crumble, and Debra could be seen struggling. Furthermore, there were mental health concerns before the relationship issues, but as Lee filed for divorce in 2009, the tension escalated.
The first issue that was reported was when she was admitted to a mental health facility in 2004. The reason her mental health stability was questioned was because she abused her daughter, Kiersten. Later, Debra tried to commit suicide in 2009 in front of his two children.
This led to severe concerns as the deteriorating mental state of Debra seemed quite harmful. It also led to Lee worrying about the safety of their children; hence, he applied for a temporary restraining order so that Debra couldn’t visit them. The court gave him temporary custody of the children.
How Did Events Turn This Dark?
After her husband put a restraining order on Debra Jeter, the temporary custody is what kept the children safe. Later, a judge lifted the restraining order, which was the pivotal situation of this event. This was quite a surprising decision, leaving Debra completely unsupervised with children!
The little things that went on to turn off significantly horrifying events started with lifting the restraining order. Once Debra was granted complete unsupervised access to her children, the next path was ready to be followed.
It was on 5 June 2009 that Debra was supposed to meet her daughters, Kiersten and Kelsey. The prearranged meeting took place almost 15 days later, and of course, the children were quite excited to meet their mother. They did not know what was waiting for them…
When she met her daughters, she told them a surprise awaited them. She then took them to an abandoned house in rural Texas. The unthinkable plan is both shocking and scary as the girls are in the biggest insecurity and unsafe place with their mother!
What Led To her Slitting Her Daughter’s Throat?
After Debra took the children to the abandoned house, she took a knife and first attacked her older daughter, Kiersten. She turned on her daughters, too shocking to imagine. Well, it is a reality! Her intention was clear: to kill off both her daughters.
This is when Kiersten started shouting for her sister to run! She is a brave girl, and in the face of danger, she constantly tries to save her sister from Debra’s relentless attack. However, the younger daughter was completely confused. Considering she was quite young and her mother slit her throat, leading to her death!
Even with all the critical injuries, Kiersten constantly requested her mother to consider her life. She kept pleading for her life, which then led to her mother calling 911 for help. It is a sign of a smart and intelligent kid in the face of danger. Now, imagine how the call will be.
In the chilling 911 call, Debra admitted that she had killed her children! In the call, there was no remorse, even as she was saying that she just killed the children. With one daughter already dead and another daughter clinging to dear life, her reactions and responses did shock the operators and the first responders as well.
At times, the decision to call 911 is very contradictory. However, the whole incident is quite confusing. Her trying to slit their throats and then calling an ambulance for Kiersten is confusing as hell. She was arrested on the scene, raising her hands!
Where Is She Now?
After being arrested, Debra was put at the Hill County Law Enforcement Center on a suicide watch. The heinous crime she committed can be one of the main reasons for her mental health issues! Currently, she is at the Gatesville prison facility and is presently incarcerated.
She is serving a life sentence as the Texas Department of Criminal Justice runs the prison. Attempted murder and murder charges were put up against Debra, along with being posted a $1.5 million bond. A plea bargain of life has been requested after she pleaded guilty to both charges in 2010.
Jeter is trying to avoid the death penalty; thus, she is serving a life sentence. Before going to prison, she apologized to her surviving daughter and her ex-husband for what she had done.
